People have relied on bees over thousands of years for successful farming. Bees are the best pollinators in the world and responsible for pollinating 40-70% of what we eat. Without them the world would be a very different place. Placed strategically, beehives can as much as double some fruit and vegetable yields. In this way, a beehive can be a boost to a whole town or community.
Over the last three years more than one in three honey bee colonies has died nationwide, posing a serious risk to our natural food supply. When honey bees are in danger, we’re all in danger. In the 1970s, there were over 7 million beekeepers in the United States and now there are less than 2 million. In addition, the elimination of woodland habitats to make way for development has meant that there are very few natural hives in existence.
We believe the answer to saving the bees is the backyard beekeeper and are doing our part to help train and support these important individuals. We’re launching an initiative to provide extensive training for backyard beekeepers and establish a honeybee conservancy on our farm.
