Permaculture Farm & Homestead Seeking Interns and Apprentices

D Acres of New Hampshire offers a multi-dimensional opportunity to explore skills of sustainable development and subsistence living. We are a non-profit organic permaculture farm & educational homestead located on 180 acres of forest, perennial, and annual gardens in the rural foothills of the White Mountains, offering a hands-on learning experience through researching, teaching and applying skills of sustainability, subsistence living, and small scale agriculture in a cooperative, communal environment. The organization is host to community and food events, workshops, and an onsite hostel.

We are currently seeking prospective applicants for our residential program. Interns and apprentices are involved in all aspects of daily operations at our working farm and homestead. Focus areas include organic gardening, sustainable forestry, animal husbandry, woodworking, blacksmithing, herbology, metal fabrication, grant writing, alternative building and earthen construction, culinary arts and food preservation, renewable energy, hospitality and hostel management, youth education, graphic design, and videography. Interns must have some experience related to sustainable living and farming, whereas individuals with no experience are encouraged to apply as an apprentice. Projects and operations are decided in weekly group meetings using consensus-based processes.

We require a minimum 6 week committment for interns and apprentices, with 26 hours of work per week expected. Interns pay a $20 fee per week, while apprentices pay $20 per day. These program fees cover the cost of room and board (treehouses or tent platforms and 3 organic, farm-fresh meals per day), as well as access to all on-site workshops and events. In addition to the 26 hours, interns and apprentices partake in the communal contract, which amounts to approximately 5-8 hours per week of basic tasks such as meal preparation, house chores, and group meetings. The 26 hour format allows for concentrated and organized communal work, while the free remaining time is at your disposal for personal projects, exploring our beautiful forested property and trail system, reading, hiking, biking, swimming, rock climbing at the nearby Rumney Rocks, or snowshoeing and cross-country skiing during the winter.

Greenbank Farm Ag Training Center accepting applications

The Greenbank Farm Ag Training Center is still accepting applications for its 2012 New Organic Farmer Training program which begins March 12th.
Located on Whidbey Island in Washington State, the Ag Training Center focuses on training aspiring farmers to run successful, ecological and community-focused farms and uses its ten acre organic farm as a real-world example and outdoor classroom. During the seven-month program, students attend weekly classes and trainings, study a university-developed farming and marketing curriculum, go on bi-weekly field trips and engage in independent research projects including the writing of a personal farm business plan… all while living on-site, co-managing the farm and marketing the produce (through a CSA program, farmers market, and to local retailers and restaurants). Through this balance of academic and experiential studies, program participants learn and experience all aspects of starting and running a small scale organic farm, from goal setting and business planning to planting, harvesting, and marketing. Our goal is to give them the skills and knowledge they need to confidently enter the growing field of sustainable agricultural producers.

Russian Pacific fertile cheap organic land; farmers wanted

I am founder and 30 year operator of 2,000 acre organic herb farm, Trout Lake Farm of Trout Lake, WA, now expatriated to Far East of Russia, Primorski Krai (state) near Vladivostok. This is the last inexpensive ag land in the world. We have bought over 5,000 acres of northern variety irrigated rice land that has lain fallow for 20 years. Lake Khanka, see on Google Map.

We would like to help active young farmers relocate here; operating partners, investors enquiries welcome. Rice yields are 5-6 tons/ha. My wife is Russian native and English teacher and we bring 11 years experience in migration and international trade along with 40 years organic intensive farming and ranching experience. Also we are open to grazing land investor partner to help stock ranch, kindred spirit wanted for excellent 15,000 acre opportunity. This area is the native habitat for soybeans. We enjoy a climate similar to Upper Mid-west; dry cold winters and warm rainy summers with perfect predictable and timely rain of 64cm annual precip.

We can help with visas and pick you up at Vladivostok International and give an amazing tour of this fertile little known yet beautiful paradise. Self-financed people only, please. This is a good chance to trade your owned acreage at rate of one to 100 and for those who are priced out of start upfarm land in USA. Ranchers like Darrell Stevenson of Montana have relocated their herds to the West of Russia where conditions are not nearly as suitable as the sunny dry winter Far East where winter feeding is not necessary in open range. Chinese help is available for best locally adapted rice and soy growing knowledge and varieties for burgeoning West European export market as well as Russian domestic market.

We are especially interested in supporters of our conservation efforts with the critically endangered Amur leopard and Japanese cranes, endangered Siberian tiger as we are in this habitat. We want to acquire farmer/rancher active participants to be a part of this preservation of this eco-tourism habitat before speculators destroy it, as economy here is booming. This is where US was during the early 60's, just behind 50nyearsnand it is easy to predict the future as we can expect the same progression here in this extractive economy that has not yet been depleted. Russia and China have the opportunity to reinvest in sustainable technologies and agriculture is the first fertile ground.

Please help us to introduce organic farming grazing, sustainable forestry and energy tech to Russia and China. Google Map go to Japan, west to Vladivostok, west across the Bay of Peter the Great to Russia China Korea border intersection. Travel up the coast an ideal area for apples, pears, vegetable truck farms. All the fruit orchards were lost during the devastating dissolution of Soviet government in 1990 and Russians resist buying produce from chemical China imports; while they pay double for locally produced vegetables. Russia pays the highest prices in the world for beef imports. Russian rice prices are 20% higher than well subsidized Chinese FOB farm prices and double US/California prices. The markets are a dream and climate and loam soils near perfect and very few farmers.
Greatest off-shore investment for peace loving Americans wishing to bail out of failing US debacle. Change the world.

Seeking Experience Organic Grower/Manager - Partner

We have a beautiful 30 acre farm in southern Virginia. Lots of pastures, greenhouse, creek and more. I am seeking an experienced organic grower that can help us launch a successful organic farm business. My background is in business and marketing. Our goal is to create a wonderful permaculture organic environment using the entire farm. To not only sell organic produce at an affordable price to our community but to teach people about the benefits of permaculture and organics.

The person we are seeking has hands on experience (at least 3 years) in the following:

+ Permaculture- design and maintenance
+ Organic growing- seeding, greenhouse maintenance, running a successful CSA. recording keeping, companion planting, composting, vermiculture, orchards
+ Sustainable agriculture
+ Natural building - straw bale etc. ( helpful but not required)

Its important for us to have a low impact environment and although it would be helpful to have knowledge in solar it is not required.

Living space is difficult but we are working towards this so if you can make it in a tent or RV for a short while as we grow. Or build your own structure, we will supply water and power by the greenhouse. Or there are very affordable apt close by but this is at your expense.

We don't have a huge amount of start up capital but many things are in place. Your efforts will insure you a partnership in the organic produce business- CSA, restaurant sales, farmer markets, You Pick and perhaps our own local market. Based on your success there is the potential to own a small piece of land here at the farm. There is no salary, only the opportunity to profit share, however if you'd like to work 12 hours a week helping with my other business (taking care of dogs) I can pay you 100.00 per week.

We are not interested in raising any meats but we do have chickens for eggs.

This is a long term position and we are looking for the right person to help build an awesome community that is conscious and sustainable. You must agree to a background check, have solid references and provide details with your experience.

Internships at The Draw near Bayfield, WI

Our internship program is a great way to enmesh yourself into the community and participate in diverse projects. We are looking for self motivated people eager to learn. Interns eat all meals with the community sharing the cooking and cleaning responsibilities. Essentially it is their home for as long as they are here. The community expects the individual to put at least four days of work a week in on the land. Two of those days will be dictated by the community (generally a group project). The other two days will be self-directed on the condition that the community supports the enterprise. Possible projects are endless. We have had people interested in compost tea, mushroom cultivation, charcoal production for a carbon sink and terra preta, earthen plasters, building woodworking tools such as a shavehorse and a kick lathe and forest gardening. It is also perfectly acceptable for the intern to work with community members on their projects throughout their stay.

Priorities for 2011 include; plant propagation (grafting and cuttings), intensive grazing of milk cows, horses and sheep, erecting fences for the livestock, planting - lots of planting, evolution of our aquaculture system, fluffing past plantings, annual gardening, perhaps an earth oven and all sorts of other interesting things that come up. We feel like internships of this kind are the best way to become grounded in real life skills and a holistic/systems epistemology. Think of it as the new age university without the debt.

The worktrader is expected to pay for half the cost of consumables (food, toilet paper est.) with the community covering the other half. We eat all organic and mostly off the land. We as a community will attempt to facilitate the worktrader in their passions. We hope to create an environment of creativity and productivity.

Please go to thedraw.org for contact information and our location. We are looking for committed individuals or couples only.

Seek Seed Funding For Certified Organic farm Development

Hi,

I own a forest in Sullivan County and would like to develop it myself rather than sell it to someone else. I have in mind a state of the art horse and certified organic (year round) agricultural farm. The horse segment will consist of a combine system facility (rental space) riding ring, paddocks, pond, stables, barn w/quarters for help. I would like it to be energy efficient, solar powered and/or naturally heated.

By developing my own forest I could than maintain the environmental integrity of my forest and the quality of life for it's wide and varied wildlife and different species and birds that inhabit my forest. Conservation and preservation of our natural environment are keystone in my effort and goal.

Need to construct Stone or brick two story colonial main house (five bedroom/bath 5,000 sq.ft home.), 5-6 (size is confidential) indoor green houses with year round growth capacity for certified organic agriculture which would cover a complete acre.

Begin marketing to an exclusive cliental (but also create a healthy food bank donating fresh produce for area shelters, schools, seniors kitchen's, etc.) and eventually as part of the growth process move forward towards having my own farmer market (s) marketing my own produce and products under own label.

All structures would remain under my personal ownership, the land is to be leased to the farm business, and that the equity in the farm business itself will be offered in exchange for the financial support.

I would also like to market bluestone, timber (thinning purposes), and grow blue spruces for Christmas sale and other plants that grow naturally on my property (which are many), ferns etc. and grow ~ produce rare and hard to find (certified) organic herbs, tea's, spices, vegetables, fruits from around the world grown right here in rural New York, right next door to the financial capital of the world. Frankly,I would like to grow everything, and get it right the first time.

My stabling would be for thoroughbred horses rental and rescue. I would market my stable space nationally and worldwide and my certified organic products produced on the farm. I would not like to limit my space and advertise as an exclusive and high end state of the art horse facility (stable).

This farm would also become a learning center and include people (as students) that would like to learn the art of farming (equestrian art w/ the care of horses, and certified organic farming) with hands on application. (This would be available for a tuition fee for further development of the farm while working the farm.)

I need at minimum of 1.5 million dollars for (budget plan, architect & business plans, farm construction, landscaping., farm related equipment and machinery, tractors, horse trailers, vehicles, on and off road, farm tools etc. (estimate is based on least expensive material & equipment without sacrificing quality) in seed money.

I own my breathtakingly beautiful forest located in the Delaware River Valley area in a small beautiful residential hamlet with it's fresh spring water. It's rapidly proliferating as New York City people are moving up and relocating in this area which is only 90 minutes from Midtown Manhattan. It's zoned residential & commercial.

This on 35.7 acres which I completely own and would be leased to the farm. I'm willing to make concessions except on; control, direction, and design of the farm. Creatively & management wise, I will maintain complete control.

I have no credit or accounts anywhere and do not qualify for any kind of traditional loan, and why I'm here seeking financial support from a benefactor, Patron, private investor and/or good Samaritan. I say this because I want you to know my situation up front and by doing so hope to get only serious responders.

*Note; it's not just about the money or else I could just sell to the landman (for natural gas exploration) but that's not the case. I would rather die and be bury on my property before I would play a part in destroying God's natural gift to man/woman kind. I love this land with all my heart and soul. and, this is coming from a City guy.

If you can work with me on the bases of financing my farm for equity in the development of my horse and certified organic agricultural farm business in a 25 billion dollar industry you may contact me at the above email address or at 845-557-6230/1914.619.3282. Just think the first virtually totally green farm in the Northeast.

Food for thought;

One last thing, Food is a commodity and with the water and food shortages globally and 9 billion people now inhabiting the earth, and 300 million right here at home, you do the math. Thank you.

Sincerely,

JR

Sustainable Skills Internship and Scholarship in NM

Ampersand Internship 2012
May 18 to July 12

The internship is a very special time at Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center. Our site comes to life as amazing folk gather for an intensive learning and community living experience. We share in a lifestyle that is abundant with the essentials.

Our rustic living conditions include, solar electricity, running rainwater (frugal use is expected with both), hot showers, an indoor bathroom with bucket style humanure composting toilets, and wireless internet access. We cook primarily with solar ovens and live off rainwater that we harvest throughout the year. We build with earth and salvaged materials. Living with Ampersand's sustainable systems is an education in itself.

We also teach workshops that the public is invited to. The internship includes several fun and educational field trips. Three days each week are dedicated to rest, play, and independent projects.

The 2012 Internship work projects:
Sustainable Food Systems: We will experiment with recipes for drying, fermenting, solar cooking, rocket stove cooking, focusing on local foods.
Natural Building: We will use salvaged pallets and earth building techniques to build a recycling shed, which utilizes a design for practical storage and accessibility, and integrates rain catchment.
Organic Gardening: Here at Ampersand we have a small rain catchment fed vegetable garden, a small greenhouse, and several perennial vegetable patches which integrate water harvesting earthworks. We will maintain and learn from the systems at Ampersand as well as other farms and permaculture sites.

Classes:

Passive Solar Design and Solar Cooking
Native Plant Walk
High Desert Gardening
Rain Harvesting and Greywater systems
Land Stewardship and Erosion Control

We see sustainability as an approach to life, which includes our relationships with everything- our resources, our waste, our interactions with the earth and fellow humans. We take our work seriously and get great satisfaction from it. We also integrate a patient attitude that values an inquisitive, fun and peaceful work/live environment. This community comes together to support each other in our paths towards living harmoniously with the earth in a way that values our individual passions and visions.
We are a 30 minute drive to Santa Fe, and a 40 minute walk to the eccentric village of Madrid. It has a coffee shop, tavern and many galleries. Housing for interns includes tent camping, the tipi, the yurt, and a strawbale cottage. We are accepting 6 interns for 2012.

Programming 4 days per week:
Day 1: Class or hands-on instruction
Day 2: Projects
Day 3: Projects
Day 4: Field trip or independent projects
Includes weekly talking circles, scheduled time for guided independent projects for each student, morning coordination meetings, weekly planning meetings, and assigned readings for discussion.

For more information on scholarship opportunities and to apply, go to:
http://www.ampersandproject.org/?page_id=20

Here's what our past interns say about their time at Ampersand:

Ampersand helped me figure out what is possible to do as far as sustainable living and closed loop systems while on a budget. It turns out that you can do a lot more than I thought through innovation, imagination and a good attitude. Ampersand not only embodies positive change for the future of the environment, but also invites visitors, interns and neighbors alike to enjoy their optimistic, activist, and all around fun approach to change. I think Emma Goldman would have approved of Ampersand when she said, “If I can't dance, I don't want to be part of your revolution.” Thanks Tía Manda and Andy.

Looking for partners for a Georgia farm

I am thinking about making a cash offer for this farm: http://www.georgiapermaculture.net/FARMFORSALE.html

I will not offer more than $80-100,000 for the farm because I don’t think the farm is worth any more than that since it is only 40 acres, doesn’t have much of a house and its infrastructure is practically non-existent. I will buy the property with my own money and then turn the property over to a non-profit organization that will function as a CSA farm; an environmental education center to promote sustainable food, energy and building technologies, and I want to have something of a technology museum (blacksmithing, cloth-making, barrel-making, etcetera) that will allow the organization to be as self-sufficient as possible for the sake of being prepared for any natural, manmade or economic disaster that may come along in the future.

However, my health is not very good so I will need help with the physical labor involved. And financial help with infrastructure and expanding agricultural production will also be good to have. So I am looking for people may want to join. A single person can join for $5000. A married couple (with or without children) can join for $10,000. Membership will give you the right to room and board providing that you contribute labor towards running the farm, museum or environmental center, and salaries will be paid based on the organization’s profits. Membership with also give you a say in running the organization. I am going to require that any new member have the unanimous approval of the existing members, and an existing membership can be sold, inherited or otherwise transferred only with the unanimous approval of the remaining members. This will insure that all of the members have a common purpose and are willing to work together.

Mesa Farm Assistant Manager

My name is Alex Young, and I came across your posting/opportunity on the Rodale website. First of all let me say I am very interested in this opportunity and hopefully this message finds you. I grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated from the University of Utah in Environmental Studies in 2008. While in school I befriended Sharon Leopardi, we connected over or goals to be farmers, and she mentioned her experiences with you. Since that time I moved to Wisconsin and attended the Michael Fields Agricultural Institute, where I completed a certificate training in biodynamic, sustainable and organic agriculture. That program led me to a job as crew manager on an organic CSA vegetable farm, Primrose Community Farm. I just completed my second season working for this farm and I am looking for ways to come back out west and follow my heart to the desert.
I would love to start the conversation with you and can email you a more complete resume of my work experience. Please feel free to look at the website of my current employers at primrosecommunityfarm.net and contact me for anymore information I can provide.
Thank you for your time,
Alex Young

I don't see any Canadians posting on this site, but thought I'd give it a try.
My husband and I have found 15 acres of arable land to purchase here in Summerland BC, Canada but we would like to partner with someone with financial and knowledge resources.
I have years of food and ornamental gardening skills, teaching skills, and communication skills; Steve has construction skills and has the strongest work ethic of anyone I've known. We've also both run businesses.
Here's what we'd like to farm:
- large fruit and vegetable garden
- chickens (eggs and meat) and, possibly, turkeys

- aquaponics in the form of tilapia and greens
More information is certainly available. Is there any like-minded person out there who would be willing and able to move to Canada?
