Farming for change
A new generation of organic farmers are likely to have degrees from upscale colleges and few, if any, farming in their DNA. For many of these new back-to-the-landers, farming is a form of environmental and social activism. They wish to be part of creating a sustainable food system that delivers healthy fare close to where it was grown.
Disenchanted with materialism for materialism’s sake, these young farmers yearn for an honest days work. And, thanks to the growing organic and local movements, they are finding that the right crops grown for the right markets can also mean an honest-day’s pay.
