Organic farming may be best way to feed world's hungry

 
A number of converging studies are demonstrating that not only can organic agriculture feed the world without polluting the planet, it can do so more effectively and efficiently.
 
While average organic yields in developed countries tend to be slightly less, researchers said, organic methods in developing countries—where food is scarce and agricultural chemicals are expensive—can be two to three times more productive when compared to conventional agriculture. Organic methods also offer more promise in these countries over time, the studies showed, because they build up the natural fertility and resilience of the soil rather than depleting it.
 

Studies included those conducted at the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment, the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at the University of Iowa, and the Henry A. Wallace Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland.
