Italy passes bill on coexistence among farming methods

Posted December 17, 2004: Italy passed a bill outlining measures for coexistence between genetically modified, conventional and organic crops. The bill passed despite a lack of enthusiasm from Prime Minster Silvio Berlusconi, several ministers and Attorney General Roberto Castelli. Berlusconi and several ministers tried to block the bill as restrictive and illiberal but in the end voted in favor of it because of public outcry.

Castelli, on the other hand, was the only minister to vote against the ban, Roberto Pinton of Italy's Green Planet told GM Watch. But he voted as an opponent of biotechnology arguing coexistence involving GMOs is impossible.
