We need a 10-15 acre farm for our dream to start!

There are many CSAs here in Colorado but none that teach people how to live off the land or that provide food year round. People can't prepare when so many lack the basic skills needed to survive. My wife and I want to start a farm that grows healthy produce, has chickens, goats, and other meat sources and provide that to our community. We want to get people involved and hold classes to teach everything from how to preserve and can food to how to clean and dress a deer.

Typical CSAs produce vegetables for 5-6 months only because they are very seasonal. We want to do a large greenhouse and produce vegetables for 12 months. We also understand that our economy has changed and so must the typical CSA. No more just seasonal or "unique" items in the weekly share. We want to do tomatoes, potatoes, eggs, peppers, carrots, onions, etc. every month for our members. The items an average shopper buys from the grocery, except healthy and organic!

Heirloom seeds are also important to us because God put plants and fruits on the planet for us to eat. Most seeds today have been modified for various reasons and are made to be sterile. Only heirloom seeds can be harvested and bear fruit year after year. We will not plant any hybrid plants.

GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) are what it is called when man alters the DNA of a plant, fruit, or vegetable. Corn is actually a regulated pesticide by the EPA because of its alterations and added chemicals. Over 90% of the corn, soybeans, and cotton grown in the country are GMO. All that taken into consideration, in the event of a crisis, such as an extreme food shortage, we must have seeds that reproduce, and not hope we can find seeds at the grocery store.

We want to protect our family and our extended family and prepare for the possibility of a very scary future. We want to grow our own food from heirloom seeds, harvest the seeds for future use and raise our own meat. We want to farm natural and organic for better health. God made perfect food for us to eat and we should honor that and not try to modify everything.

By our estimations, we could supply natural, organic, non-GMO food weekly to 150-200 members with as little as 10-15 acres. This includes the land needed for goats, chickens, and rabbits for meat. I have a business plan to support our assumptions. What we need is an investor or a farm willing to get us started. We do not have the resources to buy a farm or for a large down payment. We need a break and a chance to start something totally different in the world of CSAs. Anyone interested please respond and I will forward a copy of our business plan.

Wanting to buy a Farm in SE South Dakota

Hi, my family and I live in Spearfish SD, and our dream is to be able to buy around 10 acres with a decent farmhouse and barns on it. We want to raise our own animals for food and an organic garden and orchard. We would like to buy this land in either SE South Dakota, Vermillion area, or NW Iowa. A contract for deed or long term loan through the owner would be ideal.
We would also be open to the idea of working for older farmers.
We are a very hard working family, and just want to live the simple life.

Seeking Organic Farming Internship Position in California.

I'm a twenty-five year old man, born and raised in Southern California and I'm very interested in learning self-sufficiency skills. I have no experience in agriculture or farming but I feel that in this unpredictable market, self sufficiency is going to be the key to survival. I'd like to learn how to grow, hunt, and catch my own food, prepare a water well for drinking and cooking, build my own log cabin using the least amount of tools and materials from a store as possible, and construct basic furniture needs. In all, I'd like to acquire the skills necessary to live a self sufficient frontier life. I'm willing to work for no pay.. just room and board as I'm confident the experience and education I get will be well worth my hard work and service. My current financial situation is going to make it difficult to travel very far so I'm hoping to find something in California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado etc. If you have any questions or would like to contact me, my cell phone number is: (951) 837-7494. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

looking for a partner/Rochester NY area

I am looking for someone that wants to farm with a 100% commitment. The farm is currently being rented out so it is not brush land. I would like to grow organic vegetables and fruit. I do not have much experience in that area. The person I am looking for has to have experience in organic methods. I have many ideas for the future also by adding chickens, ducks and maybe dairy goats.

The farm is located 30 miles east of Rochester right off route 31 in Palmyra.

This is not an established business as of yet. I am looking for someone that wants to farm, has experience and wants part ownership. I am in my forties, want to do this for the rest of my life and my children do not want to farm at all. If interested please e-mail at whymeacres2001@yahoo.com.

Thank you

Pacific Russia organic land

I am founder and 30 year operator of 2,000 acre organic herb farm, Trout Lake Farm of Trout Lake, WA, now expatriated to Far East of Russia, Primorski Krai (state) near Vladivostok. This is the last inexpensive ag land in the world. We have bought over 5,000 acres of northern variety irrigated rice land that has lain fallow for 20 years. Lake Khanka, see on Google Map.

We would like to help active young farmers relocate here; operating partners, investors enquiries welcome. Rice yields are 5-6 tons/ha. My wife is Russian native and English teacher and we bring 11 years experience in migration and international trade along with 40 years organic intensive farming and ranching experience. Also we are open to grazing land investor partner to help stock ranch, kindred spirit wanted for excellent 15,000 acre opportunity. This area is the native habitat for soybeans. We enjoy a climate similar to Upper Mid-west; dry cold winters and warm rainy summers with perfect predictable and timely rain of 64cm annual precip.

We can help with visas and pick you up at Vladivostok International and give an amazing tour of this fertile little known yet beautiful paradise. Self-financed people only, please. This is a good chance to trade your owned acreage at rate of one to 100 and for those who are priced out of start upfarm land in USA. Ranchers like Darrell Stevenson of Montana have relocated their herds to the West of Russia where conditions are not nearly as suitable as the sunny dry winter Far East where winter feeding is not necessary in open range. Chinese help is available for best locally adapted rice and soy growing knowledge and varieties for burgeoning West European export market as well as Russian domestic market.

We are especially interested in supporters of our conservation efforts with the critically endangered Amur leopard and Japanese cranes, endangered Siberian tiger as we are in this habitat. We want to acquire farmer/rancher active participants to be a part of this preservation of this eco-tourism habitat before speculators destroy it, as economy here is booming. This is where US was during the early 60's, just behind 50nyearsnand it is easy to predict the future as we can expect the same progression here in this extractive economy that has not yet been depleted. Russia and China have the opportunity to reinvest in sustainable technologies and agriculture is the first fertile ground.

Please help us to introduce organic farming grazing, sustainable forestry and energy tech to Russia and China. Google Map go to Japan, west to Vladivostok, west across the Bay of Peter the Great to Russia China Korea border intersection. Travel up the coast an ideal area for apples, pears, vegetable truck farms. All the fruit orchards were lost during the devastating dissolution of Soviet government in 1990 and Russians resist buying produce from chemical China imports; while they pay double for locally produced vegetables. Russia pays the highest prices in the world for beef imports. Russian rice prices are 20% higher than well subsidized Chinese FOB farm prices and double US/California prices. The markets are a dream and climate and loam soils near perfect and very few farmers.

Greatest off-shore investment for peace loving Americans wishing to bail out of failing US debacle. Change the world; sustainably.

What We Offer ~ 38 acres, Free rent, electric/water....

When I was in college getting a bachelor’s degree in biology (along with 40 credit hours in history) I became interested in ecology and sustainable technology. I have been looking for some way to set up an organic farm that could double as an environmental education center that could research and demonstrate ecologically sustainable food, energy and building technologies (rammed earth, strawbale, compressed earth block etcetera).

My mother’s mother was raised on her family’s dairy and poultry farm in North Carolina where her family has been farming since the Revolution. My father’s parents were both expert vegetable growers so I have been around gardening my whole life. I’ve had my own garden of some sort or another since 1981, and I have used mostly organic methods since the early 1990s.

My uncle died unexpectedly in 2005 and I inherited a fair amount of cash. However since then my health has turned bad (congestive heart failure, high blood pressure and debilitating arthritis). My only family is my mother who is disabled with lupus. So I couldn’t set up a farm of any kind without having people to help with the physical labor. So my thinking now is to set up some kind of ecovillage or other intentional community that would be as self-sufficient as possible in terms of food, tools and energy. In addition to the farm I want the community to have some kind of living technology museum to explain the history and environmental impact of various technologies that are essential to a self-sustaining community. This will include things like making textiles and clothing; blacksmithing, shoemaking, barrel making, etcetera.

The community will be a not-for-profit organization. Any income that the community generates will be re-invested in the community or paid out as employee/director salaries.

The community will have 3 levels of membership. You can sign on as an employee and trade your labor for room and board and eventually receive a salary based on the community’s income. You can also simply rent the community’s land and facilities and operate as an independent farmer or craftsman. And persons seeking a position on the board of directors will have to invest at least $5,000 in the community’s infrastructure and provide three years of labor.

Would you be interested in letting your land in Tennessee be used for this?

Thank you,
Jon Arnett

Grower available in New England

My agriculture experience started in the fall of 2006 when on family land in Florida. We cleared and fenced in 8 acres for the horses, goats and donkeys. In the fall of 2007 I did a fall tomato crop. I had five thousand tomato plants. This was a self taught project with much being learned. I did a second season of tomatoes in the spring of 2008 after which in mid July I returned to N.H. where my time was split between special projects and being the assistant to the head gardener for the then quarter acre of organic vegetables at seasonal retreat in northern, NH. The retreat serves up to 500 meals a day to the guests at the height of the summer season. In the fall of 2008 the head gardener informed me she would not be returning in 2009 and suggested I take her place. The directors were agreeable and I immediately began doubling the garden to a half acre and adding a 20’ x 48’ greenhouse. The 2009 gardens were a great success with the kitchen staff constantly telling me they had never seen so much produce go into the kitchen from the garden and guest after guest complimenting on the expansion as well as the quality of the vegetables.

For me personally the 2009 growing season was very gratifying. There were many heart felt good byes with many of the younger staff thankful for the knowledge and wisdom I was able to pass to them. For me it is very for filling to be able to be a roll model for young adults. It is also gives me great joy to be part of the bye local movement and making a positive contribution to the earth we all share.

2010 brought yet more expansion, again doubling the size of the crop area to over an acre. We had an additional 4 acres cleared and stumped for future crop space. The greenhouse proved to be most valuable as all the seedlings were started in it, in March right after the maple syrup operation was wrapped up. The compost operation was moved and expanded to accommodate the expanded crop area. We added two dozen chickens to the milking goats that where there. An older tractor was purchased to increase production and with soil improvements and better weather conditions the quality and quantity of the vegetables increased.

In 2011 I set up two small gardens a my daughters houses. Taught them and they families the whole gardening process from beginning to end. I find it truly amazing how people who have looked at growing negatively in the past. Get such gratification from their efforts and a sort of spiritual connection with the earth.

I have also owned several small businesses. A donut shop, a deck/construction company, a real estate appraisal company and a catering business. I also consider myself to be a jack of all trades. There is very little I can’t do or figure out how to fix. Plumbing, electric, fencing, machining, chain saws, irrigation, general repairs, leading and motivating a crew.

I can be contacted at vradvntrs2000@yahoo.com or on facebook at farmer steve.

Looking for farm opportunity

My family and I moved to Oklahoma two years ago to be near my in-laws. I have always gardened, but these last two years I have grown an organically managed market garden and raised chickens, steer and pigs. I have discovered my calling! Unfortunately, my in-laws lost their home in foreclosure, and now we find ourselves all alone in Oklahoma. I've returned to retail management and I find my hands aching to be out in the dirt instead.

We have family near Rolla, MO; Geneseo, IL and Glenwood, IA. We are interested in moving within an hour drive of any of these places. I would be seeking one of two arrangements: to work on someone's farm for several years, learning more about organic gardening at the smaller end of the commercial scale (CSA, U-Pick, Farmer's Market, B2B) OR to rent or rent-to-own a small farm from someone who's got a place that's collecting dust. We are a family of four, and would need a house on or near the property.

I have experience growing vegetables organically using intensive gardening practices. I've worked with vertical, bed and row gardening. I compost and use companion planting. I am an heirloom tomato junkie and would love to learn more about seed saving. I participated locally in the farmer's market the last two years, supplementing our offerings with homemade bread. I served on the market board this past year. I would love to return to raising pastured laying hens.

We don't have the money to buy our own place right now. This is the chasing of a dream to make my living off the land and to instill in my children a love of farm life. This is my long-term (lifetime!) career goal and I hope someone out there has an arrangement that can be worked out to benefit us mutually. Thanks for listening! Please email me as this board gets a bit hard to follow!

Dear Eileen,

This may not have been the reply you were looking for, but I thought I would at least shoot it to you. My partner Dave and I are at the beginning of revolutionizing the sustainable farming world. Our product, Sumagrow, produces higher yields, reduces or eliminates nitrogen fertilizers and a host of other benefits. Given your background and goals, we could use you to spread the word about the product to local farmers and communities. This could hopefully help you fulfill your dreams over time and be a win for all. Please take a look at our site and let me know if you have any interest www.thegrowpros.com

Anyone interested in an investment opportunity?

My wife and I would like to start a farm of our own. I have located a place in Upper Michigan that would be great, but as a lot of you out there know it is hard for a young couple to get the financial backing to start a farming business. Farming is in my DNA, and I am fortunate to have a wife that supports my goals and is willing to wok right beside me. I grew up farming, but thanks to greed in my family I lost the opportunity to farm the land my grandparents did. I am the last member in my family with the desire to farm. I want to raise my son to appreciate this important part of our culture. I have read many stories of people out there that have made their dreams come true, which has been very inspiring. I would love to hear any ideas people may have, words of incouragement, and/or partnership opportunities. I believe there is a lot of un tapped potential in the farming community if one is willing to work for it.

Thanks so much for reading!

Certified Organic Farm Processing Kitchen - Green House

To whomever,

We are Certified Organic Farmers in need of funding. We have no tractor, so we have used a team of mules to plow since 2007 (they are getting old) so are we, I am 50 my neighbor who owns the mules is 63. We have no delivery truck, so we use a van with no heater, no air conditioner, no seats, no carpet, no business decal, no exhaust, and a window that won't roll up. We deliver to nine local restaurants, two grocery stores, one health food store, and the Tahlequah Farmers' Market. We donate 10% of everything we grow to charity, we also donate 10% of all farm income.

We live on five acres of reclaimed farmland (previously a local dump). It took my Wife and I seven years to clean up all the broken glass, old car parts, hot water tanks, etc., things you normally encounter while cleaning up a dump. In the place of the trash we cleaned up (over 10 tons of it) we plowed two quarter acre Certified Organic gardens (one for us, one for the community). We plowed and planted a 30 tree apple, peach, pear, apricot, and pawpaw orchard, built a blue bird sanctuary, planted blue berries, and paw paws, brought wildlife back into the area, by purchasing Bob White quail, rabbits, and others. We cleared thickets and replenished the abandoned sage grass field with clover, fescue, vetch, rye grass, and Bermuda to fix and stabilize nitrogen. Every Fall we gather about half a ton of worm castings, leaf matter, an chicken manure from our free range hens, to rebuild the soil.

We built a beautiful wooded campsite to accommodate four or five wagons and teams of horses, there are several sites to put up tents as folks around here needed a place to rest while traveling on horse back or in wagons to and fro the River. We also strung electricity over head for lighting, and buried a water line to the campsites from our well.

Last Fall, we added a tree to tree 9 hole, red neck golf course, a couple horse shoe pits, three picnic tables, a hammock area, a croquet green, and two fire pits for roasting wieners and marshmallows. (Campers stay here and eat out of our gardens for free). We just enjoy relaxing with them around the campfire.

We have been building a new Farm Processing Kitchen on the place, for people in the community to put up their own Certified Organic vegetables, as we share our produce with several area families. Our gardens benefit 50 area families in addition to all the sales we make, as we harvest over 2,500 pounds annually.

We are in the final phase of construction on the Farm Processing Kitchen, but due to the 2011 drought, bringing temperatures over 114 degrees, wind of 30 to 40 mph, wildfire, and no rain for 78 days, we have run out of money to buy any appliances. We lost all of our farm revenue in the 2011 drought and cannot finish our project. The building is painted, the floor is waxed, the power and water are turned on, the heaters are going, but we have no appliances. To pass State Health Inspection we need a commercial stove, a three compartment sink, a mop sink, and stainless steel work tables. We hope to be up and running by July 2012.

Our seed and plant costs are about $600 annually, we are still paying off a used Troy-Bilt tiller that stopped running before the season was over, and we need a small green house, so we can start saving money by growing our own transplants. Any support for the continuation of our project will be appreciated.

Thank you, from Dry Creek Farm
