On-Farm Field Day: Roll Down For Organic Row Crops

Time:
Aug 5 2010 - 2:30pm - 5:00pm

Join us for an on-farm field day at Wills Daal Farm in Kutztown, PA Aug 5th, 2010 from 2:30–5pm to see organic field crops in a rotational no-till system. Rotational no-till is a system designed to reduce tillage, conserve organic matter and reduce costs. In this one pass method a roller-crimper mounted on the front of the tractor rolls down cover crops and a no-till planter mounted on the back plants cash crops. The cover crop suppresses weeds.

Tim and Ann Bock from Wills Daal Farm have been raising organic row and forage crops for 15 years. Over time they have moved away from cultivated soybean and corn systems to a rolled down cover crop for weed control. Rye cover crop is rolled down and planted to soybeans and vetch is rolled down for corn providing a weed suppressing mulch. This year Tim and Ann are participating in two research projects with Penn State and Rodale Institute to study the ability of rolled cover crops to suppress weeds compared to cultivated systems. Tianna DuPont from Penn State Extension, Northampton and Lehigh Counties and Rita Seidel from the Rodale Institute will present the early results from this year’s project. Tim and Ann Bock will explain how rolled cover crops for weed suppression fit into their crop rotation, and the advantages and disadvantages they have seen.
