2009 FFA Essay Contest Announcement and Official Rules
Rodale Institute announces its first annual essay contest entitled “How Can Farming Restore Human and Ecological Health?”
The contest is open to high-school students who are FFA members and are enrolled in vocational agriculture classes. The essay should creatively grasp and discuss the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for coming generations of farmers as they face diminishing natural resources, mounting evidence of environmental problems, and over-use of chemicals in food production.
In addition to environmental degradation, future generations will encounter pressing public health problems such as obesity and diabetes. Our current food system contributes to all these problems with its heavy dependence on fossil fuels used in production of fertilizers, pesticides and gasoline used for production and long-distance transportation of often high-calorie and nutrient -poor food products. The negative impact of this approach influences not only our health and the environment but also the fragile economic base of our rural communities.
