Be a farm worker
No job? Take one usually filled by an illegal immigrant.
The issue: According to the Migrant Farm Worker Justice Project 85% of the nearly one million farm workers are immigrants and up to 70% of them are illegal. And public sentiment on the issue of illegal immigration has been simplistic to say the least. Our food system is intimately dependent on this undocumented population. Despite claims that illegal immigrants are “stealing our jobs,” Americans have historically been unwilling to take these low-paying jobs in poor working conditions.
With joblessness at an all-time high and unemployment benefits coming to an end for many, the United Farm Workers (UFW) have launched the Take Our Jobs campaign challenging Americans to step up and linking willing (and legal) workers with jobs on farms across the country.
Take action: Sign up for a job or, better yet, push for immigration reform. Pledge to support the AgJobs bill which "provides immigration status for experienced farm workers who must continue to work in American agriculture for the next 5 years." (Learn more about the AgJobs bill at UFW's website.)
