USDA plans unannounced spot testing for pesticide residue at highest-risk organic farms
Testing crops for pesticide residue at mixed organic-conventional farming operations, and organic farms near conventional farms where pesticides are used, will be two targets for the USDA’s vow to implement verification it had not done previously. The testing is called for in the program rules.
Responding last week to findings of an internal audit of many enforcement deficiencies, National Organic Program administrators said they are planning to start unannounced spot testing on the high-risk farms and will also check for compliance at processors and retail levels with comprehensive organic regulations .
The pesticide residue spot testing is slated to begin in September.
