Spread of second GMO crop approved for Europe

Despite concerns raised by the public on potential negative effects of genetically-modified crops on human health and cross-contamination of non-GMO croplands, the European Commission has approved growth of a modified potato across Europe.

The decision also contradicted wishes of European governments to avoid GMO seeds, resulting in the first time a modified crop has been approved for cultivation on the continent in 13 years.

Before the ruling, only one GMO maize (corn) crop had been authorized for growth in Europe, back in 1998. GMO cropland only covers about 0.12 percent of agricultural lands in the EU, but that acreage is expected to rise in the future as 17 other GMO crops await consent for cultivation.
