Cuba plans organic urban farms to revive agriculture

The Cuban government has announced a project that promotes fruit, vegetable and livestock production in four mile-wide rings around 150 cities and towns within the country. It is hoped that the five-year initiative will rejuvenate Cuba’s agriculture and improve its economy.

The government will continue to control most aspects of the production and distribution of foods, but new farms will include privately-owned and cooperative enterprises in addition to state-owned operations.

The pilot program is occurring in the city of Camaguey, where 1,400 farms covering 128,490 acres will feed approximately 75 percent of the urban population’s total food need.
