EPA examines atrazine risk to babies; addresses public health

Throughout 2010, the EPA is examining the toxicity of atrazine, a weed killer used by many agricultural growers in the United States. Scientific studies have linked atrazine to an increased risk of cancer and  hormone changes in human and animal cells, but attention is now being focused on newborn risks.

At a meeting by the EPA’s Scientific Advisory Panel, five recent studies were reviewed that connect atrazine with birth defects and other ailments.

Research indicates that agricultural chemicals polluting water sources can affect pregnant women and heighten risk of infants developing severe birth abnormalities. In water samples collected around the nation by USGS, agrochemicals were continuously present and atrazine concentrations frequently exceeded federal safety standards.
