Nutrition experts share top five food and nutrition trends for 2010

The primary trend for 2010 will be consumers choosing more fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as more packaged produce, in an effort to eat healthier. Produce sections of supermarkets and farmers’ markets have experienced greater traffic over the past year than previously. Reduced sodium in foods is also anticipated as producers experience pressure from the health community to help Americans consume less salt.

Everyday eco-living will also be adopted, as many people have altered their lifestyles over the past year to “live green” by recycling and buying locally grown products. The nutrition labeling system is expected to be standardized and regulated in 2010 for greater transparency of nutrition in foods.

Quality calories will be important to consumers, as individuals will buy foods that use natural spices and ingredients and provide abundant nutrition and limited preservatives.
