Consumers continue purchasing organics despite poor economy
The market research firm Mintel reports that around 40 percent of consumers have continued purchasing organic products during 2009’s recession. Only 3 percent of survey participants have stopped purchasing organics for nonorganic choices. Higher costs of organic foods have not deterred consumers from spending more money on nutritious and healthy options.
Loyal buyers of organics remain, as David Browne, senior analyst at Mintel, states, “Heavy users of natural and organic food and drink are most likely to indicate they’ve traded down to less expensive organic options.” Even occasional purchasers of organics continue to support such products, as the survey reveals “less-frequent consumers of organic products have shown that they haven’t shifted their behavior.”
