German assessment tools quantify sustainability at farm level

Agricultural scientists at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen and colleagues in theoretical and applied science have developed modeling tools to much more carefully assess a farm’s sustainability factors.

They evaluate material and energy flows, emissions in air and water, threats to soils from erosion and compaction, biodiversity as well as calculate the climate balance .

The scientists integrated these model components into a single software application and have tested 80 farms across Germany, producing "virtual enterprises" with graphic visualizations of their environmental data.
