“Big Food” tactics closely mirror those of “Big Tobacco”

In a Yale 360 Interview Kelly D. Brownell, psychologist and director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University, argues that the food industry avoids regulation of unhealthy, obesity-causing foods with the same fervor – and tactics – that the tobacco industry has fought oversight. He points out that these companies do everything they can to plant doubt and confusion about scientific findings in the public’s mind, distort science, market to children, and continuously introduce so-called “safer” products whose health benefits are often quite overblown.
