World's largest urban community farm sprouts from decay

A planned urban farm on the Lower East Side of Detroit will make more than 70 acres of abandoned and vacant land productive and publicly useful. Director John Hantz said Hantz Farms will be the world’s largest urban farm and will “serve the community, increase the tax base, create jobs and greatly improve the quality of life in an area that has experienced a severe decline in population." Hantz brings a long history of public service and community revitalization to the project, and hopes to make Detroit, previously on its way to becoming a ghost town, a leading example in the nation’s green movement.
