Food safety issues tip famine and trade scales in Africa
More investment in food safety infrastructure - staff and facilities required to monitor and maintain a safe food supply - may be one of the missing links in developing countries’ ability to compete in the international marketplace, let alone feed their own citizens. In January of this year, Kenya was forced to destroy $8 million worth of the corn harvest, a staple crop in the region, due to aflatoxin contamination.
