When the manure outsells the milk

A few years ago, a pair of Connecticut dairy farmers wondered what to do with the grainy-smelling solids left over from harvesting methane from manure in their biogas digester. Several ideas later, they have a patent pending on their newly mass-produced biodegradable CowPots. The pots hold up for months in the greenhouse, then lend fertility to their seedlings when planted into the ground.

Plus, the pots are a great income-enhancer in an ailing economy. “It’s a strange world when poop is more valuable than milk,” says farmer Matt Freund. Full story: The New York Times
