Land grant scientists say biotech companies thwarting research into GM crops

“No truly independent research can be legally conducted on many critical questions” concerning the latest GM crops, said university scientists in a statement submitted to the EPA. Biotech companies counter that government regulations and patent agreements prevent the crops from being grown for research purposes.
 
Many researchers who are not against the principle of GM crops are simply frustrated that they cannot supply adequate information to farmers about how best to grow the crops, and annoyed at controls surrounding research and information increasingly funded by the private, rather than the public sector.
