Certified “naturally raised” livestock standard falls short of consumer expectations

The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service’s new voluntary “naturally raised” standard has drawn criticism from consumer groups. Consumer’s Union and Food and Water watch issued a press release enumerating their concerns about the standard, which gave only a few broad stipulations for livestock producers and left out issues like cloning, pesticide use and genetic engineering.

Patty Lovera of Food and Water Watch worries that the standard will “invite agribusiness to greenwash their products and rip off consumers.” See this blogger’s story for a link to the full press release. Full story: usfoodpolicy blog
