Urban organic farming center opens on Guelph campus

The University of Guelph, home to the first organic agriculture major in North America, officially opened the Guelph Centre for Urban Organic Farming in September. The one-hectare plot in the northwest corner of the university’s arboretum will provide students with experiential learning and serve as a community as well. "Real ‘produce' is not so much food as the farmers who will produce the food in the future," said Plant Agriculture Professor Ann Clark, the creative force behind the Centre. "The intent is to help people become more food self-sufficient, to depend less on purchased—often imported—foodstuffs, and to improve both food safety and food security." Full story: The Ontarion
