Old growth forests are crucial carbon sinks, say researchers

Contrary to popular belief, forests between 15 and 800 years old absorb more carbon dioxide than they release, accounting for about 10 percent of net world carbon uptake. Scientists traditionally thought that the amount of carbon lost to decay negated the amount absorbed, but new evidence shows the increasingly prominent role older forests will play in the war on global warming.
