Demand for high-value crops pushes limits of land and energy

As incomes rise and more of the world’s poor reach middle-class status, they demand more food, particularly meat. Meanwhile, prices for commodity crops like wheat, corn and rice have more than doubled in the past two years. Demand surpasses supply, and the productivity promised by Green Revolution innovations now appears unsustainable, as arable land and the natural-resource base approach their limits and costs of basic inputs skyrocket.
