Government proposes eliminating irradiation label from foods

 

The FDA has proposed “softening labels” to replace the term “irradiated” on food labels with the more benign “pasteurized” alert, and would only require items to be labeled if the radiation causes a material (discernable by changes in texture, taste, smell, etc.) change in the product. There is debate over the level of consumer concern over the change; many speculate that consumers would find it misleading and not adequately specific. The food industry is likewise concerned that “irradiated” carries a negative connotation would too easily turn customers off. Full story: USA Today
