G8’s meeting disappoints less-developed countries
The countries in the Group of Eight (G8) came together in Japan recently and agreed to make cutting their greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2050 their target to help slow global warming. The goal of the meeting was to draft climate-change plans before the Kyoto Protocol expires. However, critics say that the results show “a complete failure of responsibility” from the nations’ leaders because the document is not legally binding. Also, the G5 (China, India, South Africa, Mexico and Brazil) nations have accused the richer G8 nations of adopting the wrong outlook on the issue and expressed hope that their goals will become more ambitious.
