Local foods feed more locally
As fuel and food prices rise, more people are becoming aware that local food could help them save time and money. The nonprofit DC Central Kitchen is one organization using these facts to its advantage. The organization is a “community group that runs a culinary job training program and serves 4,500 meals a day to the needy,” according to this Post article. The DC Central Kitchen has stopped buying from nationwide wholesalers in favor of food from nearby states. Buying locally also provides a market for “seconds” or fruits and vegetables retailers reject because they may be blemished or otherwise imperfect. Full story: Washingtonpost.com
