U.S. promotes biotech solutions to food crisis

The United States intends to promote the use of bioengineering and increased scientific research to help improve food security at the upcoming World Food Security conference, hosted by the U.N. World leaders will meet at the conference to discuss plans to prevent food prices from rising further. U.S. secretary of agriculture Ed Schafer will concentrate on extending support to developing countries to allow them to increase their food production and will ask that nations to “encourage innovative technology, including biotechnology” to increase yields. Meanwhile, the organization Friends of the Earth (FOE) has pointed out that the U.S.’s proposals could backfire, leaving countries even worse off.
