WWF backs Brazilian biofuel projects

A report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) states that ethanol from sugar cane, common practice in Brazil, is much more efficient than other biofuels. However, the report states, this production could pose a threat to local ecosystems. The WWF supported the argument of Brazil’s government that ethanol production is neither diminishing food production nor contributing to deforestation, although it could reduce biodiversity and pressure water supplies. To help minimize these and other problems, the report suggests strict rules on where sugar cane can be farmed and “the setting up of a new network of protected areas in the regions where sugar cane is expanding,” according to a BBC news report.
