Vandana Shiva blames economic systems for food crisis
Vandana Shiva, director of the Research Foundation on Science, Technology and Ecology and the founder of Navdanya, thinks that incompatibility between the environment and global economics is the reason for soaring food prices. According to Shiva, the food and water crisis is a result of people having been forced to either conform to the global market or be overtaken by corporations. She told AlterNet that the media has skewed coverage of the topic. When questioned about the connection between the current food crisis and global warming she responded that “industrial farming […] is heavily responsible for emissions of greenhouse gases.” She also says that “Water scarcity [is] being created by non-sustainable systems of production for both food and textile.” Her solution is to change the global marketplace so that humans are sharing and protecting the planet rather than privatizing and polluting it.
