Obese people being blamed for food crisis and global climate change

Researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine claim that individuals who are obese are causing increases in the prices of food and fuel. They determined that obese people need to consume 20-percent more calories than an average person and that their extra demand for food requires farmers to use more oil. The need for more oil in turn drives up food prices making it more difficult for the poor to afford. “Obese people are likely to rely on transport more and put more strain on that transport because of their mass” as well, according to the researchers. They say that the solution is to promote walking and cycling as a way to reduce both fuel prices and peoples’ weight. Full story
