Melting glaciers are releasing dangerous chemicals (research)
As glaciers in the Arctic melt, they are releasing persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including DDT, into the oceans. A study led by marine biologist Heidi Geisz found DDT levels in penguins that were as high as when the chemical was being heavily used by humans. According to the article, “these toxic chemicals persist in the environment, bioaccumulate in food chains and are common contaminants in fish, dairy products and other foods.” Arctic organisms are not the only ones at risk, as even fish caught around Los Angeles have been shown to contain extremely high levels of DDT, which is extremely harmful to biological systems and humans.
