China's appetite for rubber fuels poorer countries' economies, but places burden on some
With China expecting to gobble up fully a third of the world’s rubber production by 2020, some poorer countries are calling rubber trees the miracle crop that could pull them out of poverty. But food—and suitable land on which to grow it—is also an ever more scarce commodity, and some Chinese companies are being accused of getting rubber concessions from public officials without fairly compensating farmers.
