Food waste puts water and land resources in distress
Water is a major requirement in the production and transportation of food, and when food is wasted, water is wasted as well. As both food and water become more scarce, it becomes ever more critical that waste after production is curtailed. The report “Saving Water: From Field to Fork – Curbing Losses and Wastage in the Food Chain” drafted by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) calls on governments to cut post-production food waste by half by 2025.
